Seattle will soon be home to one of the nation's first edible garden and forest. The forest is located in the Beacon Hill neighborhood on a 7 acre plot of land.
Imagine a 7 acre Garden of Eden, if you will, full of fruits and vegetables, nuts and more. All for everyone to forage on as they walk through this wonderful amazing place!
What is a food forest you might ask?
A Food Forest is a gardening technique or land management system that mimics a woodland ecosystem but substitutes in edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Fruit and nut trees are the upper level, while below are berry shrubs, edible perennials and annuals. Companions or beneficial plants are included to attract insects for natural pest management while some plants are soil amenders providing nitrogen and mulch. Together they create relationships to form a forest garden ecosystem able to produce high yields of food with less maintenance. ~ Beacon Food Forest
The layout of the project is said to have walking paths and learning centers, possibly even bee hives to help pollinate the different varieties of plants.
Imagine strolling through the forest and picking a blueberry off a bush or a strawberry. Then reaching up and grabbing a few walnuts (when in season). The scent from this garden wafting through the air would be magical. Have ever smelled honeysuckle on a summers evening, this could be compared to the wonderful aroma coming from Beacon Food Forest.
Hopefully this will be a big hit in Seattle, maybe they can set a precedent for the rest of the country to follow. We all need to eat healthier and stop eating processed foods. They are slowly killing us. Even I am no angel when it comes to processed foods. But, I am making a concerted effort to eat healthier and to exercise more. With the Beacon Food Forest you could kill 2 birds with one stone, as the old saying goes. Walk through the forest for exercise while nibbling on apples, persimmons, maybe a pineapple and a handful of nuts. That sounds like a wonderful meal to me!
In my future travels a road trip to Seattle will be made. I have been to Seattle many times and visited the sites. This time if I just stop and visit the food forest, I would be in heaven. It might actually take a force of nature or the Seattle Police department to get me out of the forest. Of course a belly full of fruits and veggies might help too! Who is with me on this?
